History: Ewell, Franklin Marion, written by Frances Cunningham, niece

Franklin Marion Ewell was the second child and oldest son of Francis Marion Ewell and Frances Mary (Fanny) Weech. He was born February 6, 1862 at Payson, Utah. His Father had come to Utah in 1849 with the Ezra T. Benson Company, married Fanny in 1858 in Provo, and was engaged to manufacturing nails and hopiron from chains and wagon tires when Franklin was born. In 1877 the family moved to Summit Creek near Santaquin where they built two sawmills, the second after the first had burned. In 1882, when Franklin was 20 years old, they moved to Spring Glen to take up farming.
Franklin married Kate Thompson on June 30,1888 and they had their first son, William, eleven months later. They eventually had a family of eight chilren; five boys and three girls.
On Deceamber 1, 1897 Franklin received a patent for four quarters in two quarter-sections of land in Spring Glen. His father, Francis Marion well, had already received a patent for another quarter of a quarter-section in 1890. Franklin immediately began selling off parcels of his land to other pioneers settled in the area.
[lists 8 different deed transactions with dates and names, between Sept 1897 to Oct 1906, one of which is Purmitt] By warranty deed to his youngest brtoher, Purmitt (Permit) Samuel Ewell, on September 28, 1906.
Some of the land which fell under his patent was also sold at a tax sale in December 1901, asessed to an "unknown owner." and redeemed in March 1902 by William Miller.
Franklin Marion Ewell participated in a least two commercial ventures during his stay in Spring Glen. On January 22, 1887, the Spring Glen Canal Company was orgainzed. Its recods show that "Frank Ewell signed and subscribed to stock worth $250 - 50 shares." (at $5 a share)
The 1900 census gives his occupation as "mineral miner", and the diary of Teancum Pratt (who married franklin's older sister, Sarah) states that Frank Ewell and his brothers were interested in a mine that he had opened in Sowbelly Canyon in 1895. Referring to the winter of 1897-98, Teancum Pratt continues, "Frank continued through the following winter when I got his interest for $20....Though Frank was greatly in my way he being very poor, I dug for him and he got quite a share of the trade." [end of typed paper]

William Marion Ewell writes of his parents in his history on Pg 23b of Ewell binder, collected by Jenny Weeks in the 1970's
Father had taken up homestead there, where he lived for 12 years. [in Ewell, Carbon County, Utah, later known as Spring Glen] Mother took sick when Arthur was born and never got over it. Father sold his land and moved to Provo so Mother could have doctor's care. That took all that Father had. I was about 12 years old at the time. [901] Dad sent Mother by train. It took three days by train with us and our belongings.
Father worked around Provo, so [I] went with my Uncle Heber John Stowell, My Mother's sister Ellen's husband, to Hiawatha to cut railroad ties for the new railroad going from Price to Hiawatha.
[Page 23d] My wife [Erma] and I did the endowments and sealings for my parents in the Salt Lake Temple.
