!The Ewells in America and Some Allied Families 1635-1990, James H. Ewell,

He was a farmer having a sucessful farm three miles east of Thurman Iowa having all of his children. He then moved to western Kansas and built a sod house. A two acre lake to store water was constructed and to make it leak proof, he ran a group of horses back and forth over the bottom to compact the soil. The land was virgin that "buffalo chips" were used for fuel.

He supplemented his income by lending out money and collecting the interest. Like his father, he practiced law and served as Justice of the Peace and later after moving to Kansas City, Kansas; he became a judge, serving in that position for many years. He also established a bank and was its owner.

At the age of sixteen, during the Civil War, he enlisted in an Army wagon train to carry supplies to the West Coast. Being young, like most of his companions, hd participated in leveling some of the Indian graves that were buried six feet above ground on stakes. They fought a few Indians by wrestling with them- he fell into a river, where he subdued two Indians by holding them under water, until they gave up.
